Housekeeping

Last updated: 26 Oct 2026

Every room is always in one of three states: "Dirty", "Occupied", or "Clean". Check-in and check-out move rooms in and out of "Occupied" by themselves. Marking a room "Clean" is always a person's call. The board at Accommodations → Housekeeping shows all rooms live, and cleaning staff have their own simpler view on the staff app. Changing a room's status needs the Member role or above; viewers see the board but can't change it.

The three statuses

  • "Dirty" means the room needs cleaning. A room becomes dirty when a guest checks out, and every new room starts out dirty.
  • "Occupied" means a guest is in the room. Set at check-in.
  • "Clean" means ready for the next guest. Only ever set by a person. Nothing marks a room clean on its own.

One subtlety: if a room still has another in-house guest when a stay checks out, it stays "Occupied" rather than flipping to dirty.

The housekeeping board

The board is three columns, Dirty, Occupied, Clean, with a card per room. Drag a card to another column to change its status. A confirmation appears with an Undo action if you grabbed the wrong room. Each card shows the room, its accommodation, the next check-in or check-out with the guest's name and time, and who last updated the status. Cards sort by urgency, the soonest arrival or departure first.

The dashboard's Housekeeping tile shows the same picture for your active rooms, including the number that matters most in the morning: dirty rooms with a guest arriving today.

Tip

Start the morning there. Rooms whose next event is an arrival sort first, so the cleaning order on the board is already the right one.

You can also change a room's status from the stays timeline. Right-click a room row and choose Mark as clean, Mark as dirty, or Mark as occupied.

The cleaning staff view

Cleaning staff use the staff app (the staff address), which has its own sign-in. It lists rooms with filter tabs All, Dirty, Clean, Occupied, ordered by urgency. Tapping a room opens its details with a slide control, Slide to mark clean or Slide to mark dirty. Occupied rooms can't be changed from there; the app says "A guest is in this room. Status will update on checkout." A viewer sees "Your role cannot change room status." instead of the slide. Both views update live, so the front desk sees a room turn clean the moment it's marked.

Housekeeping and check-in

Checking a guest into a room that isn't clean shows a warning first, "Room 101 is marked dirty" or "Room 101 is still occupied", and asks whether to proceed. It never blocks you. See Check-in and check-out.

Common questions

A room shows "Occupied" but the guest has left. Check the guest out. The room flips to "Dirty" by itself; the board never needs manual fixing for departures.

Who marked this room clean, and when? Hover the history icon on the room's card. It shows who last changed the status and when.

Why can't cleaning staff mark a room occupied? "Occupied" follows check-ins, not a cleaner's judgment. The staff app only toggles between dirty and clean, and that's deliberate.
